Journalism Wins 150th Preakness In Dramatic Finish

Favored colt Journalism won the 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, coming from behind down the stretch to win over eight other 3-year-old thoroughbreds.
After being jostled among other horses, Michael McCarthy-trained Journalism, with jockey Umberto Rispoli aboard, surged past Gosger near the finish to win Saturday’s race over 1 3/16 miles on a fast dirt track at Pimlico. Gosger, trained by Brendan Walsh and ridden by Luis Saez, finished second. Arkansas Derby-winner Sandman, trained by Mark Casse with John Velazquez aboard, finished third.
In a televised interview after the race, Journalism co-owner Aron Wellman said that if "the horse is good," Journalism will run in the Belmont Stakes in June. The Belmont is the third leg of the Triple Crown.
On May 3, Journalism was favored in the Kentucky Derby and was ahead of the 18 other 3-year-olds going down the stretch until a hard-charging Sovereignty shot past him to finish first. Journalism finished second in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Sovereignty did not run in the Preakness; instead, he's waiting for the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes in New York. This decision led to a debate over spacing out the Triple Crown dates to give horses more time to recover.
At Pimlico, a $14.3 million construction project, to begin in about a month, will require the Old Hilltop site to be demolished and rebuilt at the current location, according to media reports. Until then, the Preakness will move to Laurel Park. The redeveloped Pimlico Race Course is expected to be ready for the May 2027 Preakness.
